Co-ops for Community invitation & call for contributions
Lakeshore Village Artists’ Co-op
115 Birmingham Street
Sunday, June 1st | 2:00–5:00 p.m.
By Jane Wells
I recently joined the South Etobicoke Co-op Housing Network, a new initiative started by members of the housing co-operatives along Lake Shore Blvd. to share information and organize events that will strengthen community connections, both amongst our co-ops and with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Our first event, Co-ops for Community, will be held at the LVAC Multi-Purpose Space on Sunday, June 1 from 2:00–5:00 p.m. This open house invites South Etobicoke residents to learn more about housing co-ops: who we are, how we operate, and how the co-op model not only builds affordable housing, but also builds and empowers communities. The event will feature information tables, a photo gallery, slideshows, social activities, and lots of conversation! We will also screen the trailer for The Benefits of Co-operative Housing, a new documentary film that features members of several local co-ops—including ours! We'll be joined by a few special guests, including representatives from CHFT and CHF Canada.

I encourage everyone at LVAC and the wider community to attend! Not only will there be excellent baked goods and good conversation, it will also be an opportunity to meet other co-op members from our community and share some of your own experiences as a co-op resident. I'm actively searching out old photos of the Lakeshore Village development (long-time members, I’m looking at you!) as well as anyone who'd like to share their experiences of living in a co-op. We'll print out people’s profiles and stories (no identifying information need be included) and display them in one area of the gallery. This will give visitors an understanding of the amazing diversity of our members: that we are artists and bookkeepers and bus drivers and scholars and social workers and gardeners and poets, among many other things!
And a final request for the drafters among our ranks: I could use some help drawing a simple but big bird’s eye view map of Lakeshore Village, something more or less proportional with just enough detail to identify each building. It will be drawn on craft paper and used in an activity where people can write simple statements on it, e.g., “this is where my friend lives” or “this is where I play basketball.” Nothing fancy needed!
I can be reached at sechn.advocacy@gmail.com. Let me know if you have photos you can lend us, or if you want to contribute a story to our co-op community exhibit. These should be no more than 500 words in length but can certainly be much shorter, if you want to share something vivid yet brief. Please do!
