Applications open for Assembly Hall dance residency

Process+Practice is a two-year dance residency at Assembly Hall that supports local dancers in the research, creation and presentation of new works. Presented in partnership with TOES FOR DANCE, the program nurtures artistic development and community-building by holding time and space for dancers and choreographers to experiment, discuss and explore the art form.

Professional dance artists based in Toronto are encouraged to apply by the deadline of Friday, August 2. Find details and apply.


Exhibitions

An exhibition of photography and mixed media, Shinrin Yoku: The Healing Art of Forest Bathing features six artists from the AlbArt Global Collective who explore the importance of connecting with the natural environment, contemplating ideas of space and belonging. On view until August 15. More info.

The Fashion Institute 

Closing July 26, Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive features photography from Canada’s first female astronaut, Dr. Roberta Bondar, telling the story of the migratory patterns of three bird species. More info.

Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre

Grace: One Story of Thousands follows the life and experiences of Grace, one of the 1,511 people buried in the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery. The exhibition draws on personal letters and surviving hospital records and includes contemporary works by Anne Zbitnew, Lucy Pauker, and Staz Guzar. Through July. More info.

Passages: Field Notes from Colonel Samuel Smith Park features the watercolour illustrations of local artist Michelle Parsons plus field notes to build awareness of the importance of local ecosystems and environmental awareness. Closes August 2. More info.

Hospital History Tour

Tuesday, July 23 at 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

The history of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital is explored in the patient-built underground tunnels and nineteenth-century cottages of the Lakeshore Grounds. This tour presents an overview of the 89 years of the Hospital's history and references the changing experiences of patients and staff.

Film and Television History Tour

Thursday, July 25 at 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

The Lakeshore Grounds have served as a popular filming location for movies, television shows, and commercials since 1977. Locations and stories of these productions are highlighted and the tour route includes the oldest section of the underground tunnels.
