Humber College exhibition and call for submissions

The Cottages: 30 Years of Humber, 135 Years of History
March 17—July 25, 2025
Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre, in collaboration with the Humber Archives and Libraries
Once a group of buildings housing patients of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital between 1890 and 1979, the eight buildings now called The Cottages are presently home to administrative offices, classrooms and faculty offices.
According to Madness Canada, "[t]he hospital was built using, largely, patient labour (which was unpaid) under the philosophy of Dr. Joseph Workman, who believed in work as therapy. Kivas Tully, chief provincial architect and designer of several Ontario asylums, designed the buildings on the 'cottage system,' deemed by some as superior for the classification and separation of patients, in contrast to the creation of one large central building, as was common during the period."
Through archival records, the exhibition invites us to learn more about the twists and turns that led to the transformation of these historic structures. The exhibition recognizes the thirtieth anniversary of Humber Polytechnic's acquisition of the cottages, on the site of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital.
